Snacking and sleeping

Yesterday morning I got some great news from my doctor! He gave me a plan of action and I should be all better in a few weeks. For some reason after my appointment, though, I still had all this anxiety and nervous energy pent up!

tumblr_mekn1yFJMt1rm4qs9o1_500I called my parents and had a nice long chat with them and it really seemed to help. I’m still feeling kind of nervous and unsure but I think that it is going to take a few days for it to hit me that this isn’t going to turn into some huge deal! I’ll just be patient.

After my appointment I hit up the grocery store to load up on healthy ingredients for the next few weeks. I bought apples, grapes, a rotisserie chicken, some veggies, and a huge box of spring mix. I’m planning to fix some big salads every day for lunch to get lots of fiber and protein!

cpks-provencal-saladI have to admit my eating the past couple weeks has not been the best. I’ve been really stressed and not sleeping, so I start out with a healthy breakfast but become a snack machine as the day goes on. When I’m so tired my body craves things like sweets and simple carbs, so I really need to get back on the wagon. Now that I know what’s going on with my health and can start sleeping again it will be easier to get back to tons of fruits and veggies and only 1 or 2 snacks a day between meals.

Thank you for all your well wishes on the job interview yesterday! I think it went really well. It was pretty short and all the questions were basic so I think I presented myself in a good light. I was in a rush to get there though so I only had time for hair and not makeup.

IMG_4177Oh well! It’s too hot for makeup anyway, right? After my interview I headed off to nanny until the early evening. Two girls I used to babysit in Great Falls are staying with the family I work for this week and it’s been wonderful to see them again. They’re turning into such neat people!

Last night I went to bed super early and took some Zzzquil in order to fall asleep. It really helped me! I think when we get too exhausted our bodies have trouble letting go. All day long you’re fighting off sleep and it’s hard to make the switch to relaxation when you lie down at night. The Zzzquil helped my body realize that it was okay to sleep now and sleep it did! For almost 12 hours.

Food and Exercise

PicMonkey CollageBreakfast: strawberry pancakes with yogurt. Lunch: hummus, caramelized onions, and kale sandwich. Snacks: Raisin bran with yogurt, strawberries, and a square of dark chocolate. Dinner: apple, banana, and crackers with tuna.

No workout for me today, my stomach is still being way too funky!

Icky cold

This morning something glorious happened to me. I woke up at the time I thought I was supposed to be awake. Rubbing sleep out of my eyes, stretching, and yawning, I reluctantly threw back my warm covers to stand and make my bed. Then, I glanced at the clock and it was 5am!! Back to bed for four more hours!! My heart rejoiced as my head hit the pillow.

I’ve been feeling a cold coming on for the last few days, and my head is stuffed up, I can’t hear, my throat is burning and I keep getting super hot then freezing cold.

WAAA PITY ME PITY ME!!!!!

tumblr_m6hcmd5SNI1rwcc6bo1_400hahaha. or you know…don’t. All my teachers say not to come to class with a cold but…that’s not an option. I will roll myself there in a bundle of tissues if I have to. Classmates, forgive me as I go through intervals of rapid sweating and stripping off my clothes, followed by shivering and putting them all on again as quickly as possible.

Good thing yesterday was productive because I have a feeling today will involve a lot of blankets and sleeping. And possibly a trip to campus health. Waa.

My whirlwind trip to Billings went exceedingly well. Although, I have to say, could the drive between Great Falls and Billings BE more boring? The scenery does. not. change.

When we got there on Wednesday, my mom and I grabbed some lunch immediately since we were both starving. I had the best oriental chicken salad ever! No wontons though, I didn’t want to undo all the healthy goodness. Then we headed over to our great friends Russ and Tam’s house for a while before my appointment.

My appointment was great! All the staff were incredibly friendly and talkative and it was just such a different atmosphere than so many of my other appointments. When I told them that I am going to be a doctor they said, “You’ll love it! It’s so rewarding!” It’s crazy how much of an impact it has on the patients when the doctors are happy.

That pars injection HURTS though! Holy tits! (is that inappropriate? Sorry). First they put the numbing medication all the way down between the joints of your spine which feels like molten fire. Then they flood the joints above and below the fracture with various medicines to help the body fight the pain and all the pressure feels like someone is trying to pop your vertebrae apart. Ouch!

Glad that’s over. My back feels so much better though! If I’m not pain free in two weeks it means it didn’t work so I would really really appreciate your prayers! It would be a Godsend if this could finally be the last push I need to get me on the road of recovery.

That night we went to Texas Roadhouse for dinner because I wanted to get a steak! I’m not a huge meat lover and it was the first time I’ve ever ordered a steak at a restaurant before. However, the last few weeks I’ve been crazy pale (and I have fair skin, but I’m talking like sickly pale with dark circles), super tired, and cold ALL the time. It finally hit my mom and I that I don’t have nearly enough iron right now. I run really low anyway and I’ve been eating a mostly vegetarian diet which is a bad combination! Beef…here I come.

We left Billings around 11am this morning after a delicious pancake breakfast, stopped to split a reuben on the road, and got back to my house around 3 where my sister and dog were excitedly waiting! We’re going to our friends’ pre-Thanksgiving party tonight and I’m so excited! I have two new Gap dresses and I’m busting one out tonight. Pictures tomorrow!

What is your favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving? 

I like to take biscuits and put a little turkey, mashed potato, stuffing, and gravy on there. It’s like a hot, fresh Thanksgiving sandwich and I LOVE it. I also am a sucker for pumpkin pie. What a great holiday!

Good Tidings

There are so many good movies coming out lately! I want to see The Hobbit, Lincoln, Skyfall, Wreck-It Ralph, and I’m pretty sure there are a few more that look really good! It seems like movies come and go in waves. There will be a couple months where they come up with nothing and then BAM all of a sudden there is a plethora! I guess the dry spells give me time to save some movie money since going to a show now costs 87 dollars. Or something.

Last night the mom of the kid I tutor in geometry told me his grade is already coming up! You have no idea how happy that made me. I wasn’t completely sure if I was going to be able to really help and now I know that I can! It’s exciting and I’m glad to know that I’m not just wasting his time.

I spoke with my doctor yesterday and he said that all my discs are fine and there is no nerve compression which is GREAT news. He wants me to come down to Billings next week to get another injection because I have a break on one side of the vertebrae and a faulty joint on the other side…or something. He just wants to find out exactly where my pain is originating from so he knows what next steps to take.

He also told me to be as “active as possible” and I’m not sure what to do! The last week and a half I haven’t done any exercise and I am finally at the point where I can make it through the day semi-comfortably. I’m not sure if I should maybe try the elliptical for just like 10 minutes and see what happens? hmmm…decisions, decisions…

Tonight a photographer from the Great Falls Tribune is coming to my house to take a picture of me to accompany an article they are doing on my blog! I’m excited. Except they want a photo of me cooking and I have no idea what to cook or how to do it in a photogenic manner….maybe I’ll just do some arm dancing instead 😉

What are your favorite activities to do in the snow? 

Mine is to hide inside and pretend it’s not snowing. And also to walk like a dying horse everywhere to entertain children and avoid falling.

Elevator Eyes

Good morning! I’ve decided I’m going to start sharing my meals on here so that ya’ll can see I really do put my money where my mouth is as far as nutrition is concerned. It won’t just turn into a food diary I promise! If I get bored of it then I’ll assume you are too and I will stop.

Eggs with peppers (200) + English muffin (120) + Chocolate cream cheese (55) = 375 cals

I promise I will bust out my better camera one of these days. I’m getting tired of this point and shoot being blurry half the time!

As I wait in the elementary school hallway waiting to pick up the kid I tutor I have noticed something that all little kids, but especially girls, are extremely good at. They’re called elevator eyes. You know, that sly up-and-down look that you learn to do more subtly as you get older while checking out a new person? Well, little kids are not versed in the art of being discreet.

Seriously. That look about fifty times a day three days a week. I smile awkwardly back and they just disappear into the teeming mass of backpacks and sticky fingers. Hopefully once I am less of a foreign entity I won’t invite as much…curiosity? Judgement? Who knows!

The doctor from Billings called me yesterday and said he wants to meet in person to go over the results of my MRI. The pain has been steadily (and slowly) decreasing all week so I’m sure it’s not bad news, but if you pray and feel like sending one my way I’d sure appreciate it! 🙂

Whenever people are wearing flashy shoes I always accidentally do it! It’s especially embarrassing when they catch you. haha!

Scrabble and Eggs

I made the BEST breakfast this morning. I usually eat sweet breakfasts like pancakes, oatmeal, or french toast because sweet things pair so fantastically with coffee, but lately I’m trying to switch over to more savory items. When I eat my sweet right away it usually satisfies my sweet tooth all day but this week it has just been revving it up early and then all day I am trying to ignore the fact that I REALLYREALLYNEEDCANDYNOW.

But anyway…say hello to the sunny-side up egg and cheese grilled sandwich.

 

 

It’s eggy. It’s cheesy. It’s healthy. It’s…awesome. I’ll probably eat it for the next two weeks straight for breakfast and then get super sick of it and pick it up again in a month or two.

My Sunday was lovely! I had coffee with my friend Ben and it was great to see him again. Then I headed off to meet with the woman whose son I start tutoring today and we got all the details worked out.

 

Then my parents and I ran some errands around town. (that’s me being excited because I am wearing…)

 

Pants!! Thanks to my dandy brace. It does make sitting in the car pretty awkward and uncomfortable, but it’s the doctor’s orders so I better stick with it. When we got home my mom and I played a few rounds of Scrabble while my dad got started on dinner.

 

I got EVERY X, Q, Z, and other letters that seriously make hardly any words. And my mom got almost every vowel. We were not doing splendidly.

Alice gets really cold in this winter weather and so she decided to get in on the game too.

My back is still slowly making progress from my idiot walking day. I think I have finally learned my lesson. When I start feeling better I will continue to take it super easy until at least March so that I can put this whole ordeal behind me! Impatience gets you nowhere!
