Snacking and sleeping

Yesterday morning I got some great news from my doctor! He gave me a plan of action and I should be all better in a few weeks. For some reason after my appointment, though, I still had all this anxiety and nervous energy pent up!

tumblr_mekn1yFJMt1rm4qs9o1_500I called my parents and had a nice long chat with them and it really seemed to help. I’m still feeling kind of nervous and unsure but I think that it is going to take a few days for it to hit me that this isn’t going to turn into some huge deal! I’ll just be patient.

After my appointment I hit up the grocery store to load up on healthy ingredients for the next few weeks. I bought apples, grapes, a rotisserie chicken, some veggies, and a huge box of spring mix. I’m planning to fix some big salads every day for lunch to get lots of fiber and protein!

cpks-provencal-saladI have to admit my eating the past couple weeks has not been the best. I’ve been really stressed and not sleeping, so I start out with a healthy breakfast but become a snack machine as the day goes on. When I’m so tired my body craves things like sweets and simple carbs, so I really need to get back on the wagon. Now that I know what’s going on with my health and can start sleeping again it will be easier to get back to tons of fruits and veggies and only 1 or 2 snacks a day between meals.

Thank you for all your well wishes on the job interview yesterday! I think it went really well. It was pretty short and all the questions were basic so I think I presented myself in a good light. I was in a rush to get there though so I only had time for hair and not makeup.

IMG_4177Oh well! It’s too hot for makeup anyway, right? After my interview I headed off to nanny until the early evening. Two girls I used to babysit in Great Falls are staying with the family I work for this week and it’s been wonderful to see them again. They’re turning into such neat people!

Last night I went to bed super early and took some Zzzquil in order to fall asleep. It really helped me! I think when we get too exhausted our bodies have trouble letting go. All day long you’re fighting off sleep and it’s hard to make the switch to relaxation when you lie down at night. The Zzzquil helped my body realize that it was okay to sleep now and sleep it did! For almost 12 hours.

Figuring This Out

I’m supposed to be giving up inflammatory foods, so first up on the chopping block (to see if it works) are coffee and grains. However…there have been some major stumbling blocks.

I tried quitting coffee cold turkey, but my body is used to 3-5 cups per day. That’s a lot. I almost fell asleep driving to work and now I’m starting with 1 cup a day and going to ween off from there. I’m still feeling pretty sluggish though.

Plus, tonight, after swearing I was done with carbs for a while, I opened up the cabinet and…

This is going to be a challenge.

Food and Exercise

PicMonkey CollageBreakfast: strawberry pancakes with yogurt. Lunch: hummus, caramelized onions, and kale sandwich. Snacks: Raisin bran with yogurt, strawberries, and a square of dark chocolate. Dinner: apple, banana, and crackers with tuna.

No workout for me today, my stomach is still being way too funky!

Lightning Fast

That’s how today felt, but it was one of the best days I’ve had so far this week. I didn’t have work OR class so I was able to sleep in until 8am and I haven’t felt so rested in a long time! I also got a TON of stuff done.

I have to write a research paper for my Latin American Studies class and I chose to explore medical care in Cuba. I read through 200 pages worth of articles and speeches today, and already feel like I’ve learned so much. Research projects are the

nerdalert_091412I also tackled all my chem homework and went to a long biology review session. I’ve studied a crazy amount for my test tomorrow so I’m just over it. I’m going to get a good night’s sleep, eat a big breakfast, read through the test slowly, and hope for the best. If I’m not prepared by now, there’s nothing else I can do!

I can finally do ab exercises where I extend my legs out in front of me (like V-ups) without it hurting my back! I don’t mention my back injury on here very much anymore because it’s essentially healed, but there were still a few things I couldn’t do. I thought it was as good as it was going to get, but today when I did those ab exercises I realized it’s going to keep improving!

On a side note, it feels like a ripped all my ab muscles to shreds. OW.

7a97be3b8f4513ef02d0dd8323c28c28I laid down and when I tried to get back up I literally could not do it. I had to roll over on my side and scoot my way up like a little baby. It was pretty sad. I think I killed some muscles that haven’t been worked in a loooong time.

Breakfast: toast with peanut butter and jelly. Lunch: grilled turkey and cheese with a spinach salad. Snack: Yogurt with some corn flakes stirred in for crunch. Dinner: most of a taco meal from the dining hall while I studied.

I redid the Nike “competitor” workout today to see if I’d be able to push myself a little harder and I definitely did!

Easter Weekend

This weekend was completely fantastic! I wish I had more/better pictures to show you but my point and shoot camera is a P.O.S. and my iPhone just isn’t cutting it. I’m in the market for an affordable camera that takes nice, clear pictures! Any suggestions?

Anyway, Friday night I went downtown with Madison, Cheyenne, and Cheyenne’s brother and boyfriend.

After sleeping in on Saturday, I joined Madison and Laura for lunch at the Clay Pit! My fav!

photo-75Verdict: Egg curry is fantastico. Following lunch, I drove out to Juan and Margo’s house to meet my dad and GO SEE OUR NEW HOUSE!!!!! I love love love it. I cannot express to you how excited I am about it.

photo-76This is one of my favorite rooms. The whole house has a ton of cool detailing like that ceiling. Once the hardwood is in, the walls aren’t beige and my mom gets to decorate it’s going to be nice. I have a feeling I’ll be heading out there a lot.

Once we were doing going through the house (and my dad was tired of hearing “OMG I LOVE IT!!! EEEEEE I LOVE THIS ROOM IT’S MY FAVORITE!! NO THIS ONE IS!!! OOOOO THE TUB!!!!!” I was pretty pumped) we ventured to “The Arboretum” for some window shopping.

photo-77This is what my future living room is going to look like. I can’t wait. I want to have a small house so that I can afford to outfit it with high end furniture, wood floors, decorations, and art. That to me seems so much more classy and high end than a huge house filled with lazy-boys because it would cost way too much to fill it with nice things.

We stopped at Whole Foods to pick up my groceries and grab some chicken enchiladas for my potluck on Saturday night!

photo-78 photo-1By the way, on the bottom left, that is BLAKE. Not Scott, as I previously introduced him to you. They just sound so similar…haha! We ate enchiladas, pasta, pastries, and watched one of my favorite movies of all time! Tangled! So, so good. We’re all getting together again next weekend and I’m so excited.

I spent the night at Juan and Margo’s with my dad since we had plans to go to an Easter brunch on Sunday. After several hours of studying on Easter morning, we left around 1pm to go to our friends’ Faith and Steve’s house!

photo-79We had Rudy’s BBQ, lemon bars, brownies, salad, chips…I was SO STINKING FULL. Then we hid eggs and played a round of darts! It was such a wonderful Easter afternoon spent with friends who truly feel more like family.

Even though the weekend is over, the good times are still coming! My mom, puppy, and sister are trekking their way here RIGHT NOW and will be here by Tuesday evening! I’M SO EXCITED!!! I just need to focus until Wednesday, take my chem test, and then I can just hang with Halley. Woop Woop!

Icky cold

This morning something glorious happened to me. I woke up at the time I thought I was supposed to be awake. Rubbing sleep out of my eyes, stretching, and yawning, I reluctantly threw back my warm covers to stand and make my bed. Then, I glanced at the clock and it was 5am!! Back to bed for four more hours!! My heart rejoiced as my head hit the pillow.

I’ve been feeling a cold coming on for the last few days, and my head is stuffed up, I can’t hear, my throat is burning and I keep getting super hot then freezing cold.


tumblr_m6hcmd5SNI1rwcc6bo1_400hahaha. or you know…don’t. All my teachers say not to come to class with a cold but…that’s not an option. I will roll myself there in a bundle of tissues if I have to. Classmates, forgive me as I go through intervals of rapid sweating and stripping off my clothes, followed by shivering and putting them all on again as quickly as possible.

Good thing yesterday was productive because I have a feeling today will involve a lot of blankets and sleeping. And possibly a trip to campus health. Waa.

College workout plan

College is a crazy busy time. You add class, late nights, work, extra curricular activities, and time to relax and suddenly you look up and the day is gone. Add that to the copious amounts of (let’s face it) high calorie alcohol and junk food around you and without diligence that infamous Freshman 15 will find its way to you!

aakI’m actually making it sound way worse than it is. It’s not that hard to eat healthy and get your exercise in but you do have to be proactive about it. That’s why I wanted to come up with a plan that would get all my strength training and cardio in during the week without eating up too much of my day. Here you go! I’ve included some example workouts just so you can see the format I use.

Monday: Biceps and Triceps 

Untitled-1Tuesday: Step Class (for a great cardio and leg workout)

Wednesday: Chest and Shoulders

Friday: Nike Training leg workout 

Saturday and Sunday: wing it. 

I really love this plan because it focuses on every aspect of fitness and keeps your body guessing. I bought 3 pound weights and 5 pound weights. That way I can lift 3, 5, 6, 8, or 10 pounds depending on what muscle I’m working. Being able to do my weights at home cuts out a lot of my gym time.

As always, I count calories to make sure I’m not taking in too much as I burn a lot of my energy. I’ve found that between walking across a 40 acre campus all day and working out, your body needs a lot of fuel! If you keep most of it healthy and don’t stuff yourself, you’re going to be just fine.
